Perhaps this is because, before becoming a novelist, was a technical writer in during the American software boom. Chiang is, to put it lightly, a rare breed of science fiction author. In this episode, we discussed Ted Chaing's short story collection: Stories of Your Life and Others. For the Story of Your Life portion of the podcast, we focus our attention on the written version, and its major themes like language and free will. Story of Your Life is perhaps Chiang's best known work, mostly because of the popularity of its film adaptation arrival, starring Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner. As you might expect, the story examines the Tower of Babel myth from the Old Testament and this story won the 1991 Nebula Award for Best novelette. Babylon is a science fiction, fantasy novelette and Chiang's first (and towering) published work. We spent most of our time on two of the stories in the collection: Tower of Babylon and Story of Your Life. He is one of the only sci-fi authors either of us have read who manages to successfully balance a rigorous understanding of science and technology with authorial emotional depth.

Much of the exotic language – references to the far northern reaches of an ancient landscape, culture, history, and folklore – is otherworldly. If you read to experience new worlds, The Outrun will definitely take you to one. Liptrot chose to spend five winter months on this remote island feeling less alone than she did in London. Most of the memoir’s Orkney sections are set on the so-called Mainland where the author’s family farm is located, and on one of the northernmost islands, Papay, population seventy. Many are sparsely populated or completely uninhabited. Some 20,000 people are estimated to be living on the seventy islands that comprise the Orkney archipelago. (Her brother, who attended the same university as she did, tried to help until she needed aggressive intervention.) Today, at thirty-five, she’s five years sober. The heart of the memoir takes place on the Orkneys two years after the author made it through an intensive rehab program in London, where she hit rock bottom. Through it all (her parents divorced), Liptrot felt “always loved.” Map of Orkney by Mikenorton, via Wikimedia CommonsBorn during one of her father’s bipolar disorder breakdowns, he endured a mind-boggling fifty-six electroshock treatments. By contrast, Murray 1998 and Plato & Rijksbaron 2007 contain new critical editions of the Greek text, with commentary but without translations. All three include introductory essays suitable for first-time readers of the dialogue. Bloom’s Straussian translation accompanies the reprint of his interpretive study in Plato 1987. (See record for links.) Recent readily-available editions without parallel Greek include the Hackett Plato & Woodruff 1983 (which contains analytical material omitted from the anthologized reprint of the translation), Plato & Saunders 1987, and Plato & Allen 1998. Plato & Lamb 1925, the basis of the bilingual Loeb edition, remains quite useful dynamic versions linked to current reference tools can be freely accessed at the several incarnations of the Perseus Project. Ultimately, Plato's dialogues are arguably their own best introductions as most readers will approach them in translation, we turn to these. The conversations between Greta and Big Swiss seem so polarizing because their personalities are so different. Eventually Greta’s strange questions and interruptive remarks became humorous, ironic even. At first, I considered Greta’s dialogue quite unrealistic and random. I could not stop imagining Greta’s character as Aubrey Plaza adjacent. I can largely attribute this to what seems to be obvious plot-wise (when or if Greta would ever tell Big Swiss about her true transcriptionist identity), but the dry humor of the text really brought it to life for me. It’s always difficult for me to find a book that I can’t put down, but I absolutely could not put this down. Greta becomes enthralled with one of the therapist’s clients, Flavia, who she refers to as “Big Swiss.” The text follows Greta’s journey navigating her relationship with Big Swiss and the other clients living in a city where everyone is so connected. The novel follows a woman named Greta who recently becomes single, moves into a farmhouse with her friend Sabine, and picks up a job as a sex/lifestyle therapist’s transcriptionist. I’ve also seen some discourse regarding this book being made into an HBO series, which I can’t wait to see. I’d seen some mentions of Beagin’s new release, Big Swiss, back in February, but only got around to reading it this past month. After coming across a brief recommendation on TikTok from Lauren Hower on TikTok/Instagram), and seeing the excitement on their face as they described Beagin’s writing, I just knew I had to pick up this book.
